Week 7 Overview:

The team met to discuss individual assignment for the progress paper and presentation and

discussed what type of solutions that we want to implement based on the existing solutions

and their pros and cons presented in the preliminary report

Week 6:

During week 6, the team conducted a patent research and complied the results in a patent

table attached in the preliminary report. The team also searched for existing solutions by

generally conducting literature research online, reading several published papers, and analyzing previous groups’ capstone projects. The team also updated the design specifications based on the new findings.

Since the client, Dr. Hammill went to a conference out of town, the weekly meeting was

postponed.

Week 5: Background and Existing Solutions Research

After the meeting with Dr. Hammill and Jeff Chininis on September 20th, the team started

extensive research on the following areas: current pancreatic drainage bag, protein markers

that can be detected in patient’s pancreatic fluid, and other physiological parameters that are useful for monitoring patient’s health and recovery.

We brainstormed solutions to the following problems:

(1) How can the patients be notified when their bag is full?

(2) How to maintain stable suction force of the drainage?

(3) A new drainage bag design for convenience and comfortability?

Not only do we address the medical issues, we also look into a solution for pancreatic post-

surgery drainage that does its job well and is comfortable to put on for long hours.
