Need Statement
A sensor to detect real-time post-surgical leakage to reduce risks of complications in patients and to allow physicians to take care of leakage-related issues promptly.
Project Scope
Leakage from reconstructive anastomosis often causes complications in patients who have undergone gastrointestinal surgical resection and, in severe cases requires, aggressive surgical interventions. In order to reduce the high risk of postoperative complications due to anastomosis leakage, the team proposes to design a device to detect real-time anastomotic leakage that is either bioresorbable or requires minimal surgical removal to be implanted at surgical area during the operation, in addition to the usage of stents and/or the drainage system that surgeons uses to redirect the flow of leakage.
